Carpenter ants vs termites in Windermere

Windermere wings: carpenter ants vs termites. UF/IFAS ID and FDACS termite facts. We match a licensed operator. We do not tent.

Matching service only. Under Florida Chapter 482 we are not a certified operator. We do not spray, bait, tent, or inspect.

Wings on a Windermere sill in April are not one insect. University of Florida IFAS keeps carpenter ants and termites in different figures: elbowed antennae and a pinched waist versus beaded antennae and a broad waist. Mixing them is how a homeowner bags a few swarmers, searches “termite spray,” and treats an ant that does not eat wood like a soil colony. Orlando West Pest Care is a matching service. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not spray, bait, inspect, or tent.

This is for residential homes in Windermere, Winter Garden, Horizon West, Hamlin, Waterleigh, Ocoee, Oakland, Stoneybrook West, Clermont, and Minneola. If the job is a real-estate report, start at termite and WDO or get a quote. Name Windermere. The licensee who already drives Windermere is the one who looks. We still only match. Companion posts already on this site: termite swarm vs flying ants in west Orlando and drywood vs subterranean termites in west Orlando.

What UF/IFAS actually uses to separate an ant from a termite

UF/IFAS’s ants guide is blunt. Ants have a narrow waist with one or two nodes between thorax and abdomen, and elbowed antennae. Winged reproductives have four wings, with the first pair much larger than the hind pair. Termites have a broad waist. Termite reproductives have four wings of equal size. See UF/IFAS, Ants (ENY203/IG080).

The Florida carpenter ant page repeats the same three-point key and then the wood sentence people skip. Despite their name, Florida carpenter ants do not eat wood the way termites do. They excavate galleries to rear young. They feed on honeydew, household food scraps, insects, and other foods. They do not damage sound wood to any extent. See the same ants guide, and the Featured Creatures profile UF/IFAS, Florida Carpenter Ant (EENY272).

EENY272 is the Windermere species file, not a panhandle story. Camponotus floridanus is widely distributed throughout Florida. Unlike the wood-damaging black carpenter ant of Florida’s panhandle, Florida carpenter ants seek existing voids or excavate only soft materials such as rotten or pithy wood and Styrofoam. They sting? They do not. They bite? They do. Complaints peak in spring swarm season, usually April to June, when winged reproductives show up on window ledges and at sliding glass doors. It is common, UF/IFAS says, to mistake winged ants for winged termites.

Frass is the carpenter-ant leftover: bits of excavated material and pieces of dead insects ejected from a nest. Mud tubes are the subterranean-termite leftover. Hexagonal pellets are the drywood-termite leftover. A matching service does not identify a pile from a phone photo. A licensee may.

What FDACS actually says the termite side of that pair does

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services opens its termite page with damage, not with a spray can. In Florida, termites cause more damage to structures than fires, floods, and storms combined. Homeowners insurance does not cover termite damage. Hiring a licensed pest control company to inspect and treat is the next recommended step. Florida has four known types: dampwood, drywood, subterranean, and conehead. Subterranean termites are the most destructive. Drywood are second. Identification comes before treatment because treatments vary. See FDACS, Termites.

The subterranean page is the soil sentence. They live and invade from underground. A single colony can cover one acre underneath a home. To move above ground they build mud tubes. Prevention language is licensed work plus moisture: annual inspection by a licensed company; a professional may treat with a non-repellent soil barrier or an in-ground bait system; gutters off the wall; sprinklers off the house; wood-to-soil and stucco-to-soil eliminated; mulch pulled back; credit-card cracks repaired. See FDACS, Subterranean Termites.

That is why “large black ants in the fascia” and “wings of equal length on the sill” are different matching notes. A Florida carpenter ant in pithy fascia is a general-household-pest and moisture file. A subterranean colony under a Windermere slab is a wood-destroying-organism file. Drywood pellets in a garage are a third file. Mixing them is how someone assumes a soil bait covers an insect that never ate the wood.

April rain is a swarm cue, not a clearance

The Florida Climate Center publishes NOAA / NCEI 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport: 51.45 inches of rain a year, April 2.58 inches, and 6.37 inches in September. April’s mean is 72.2°F. Annual mean is 73.0°F. See the Florida Climate Center Orlando 1991–2020 normals.

UF/IFAS says ant mating flights are usually triggered by weather cues such as the right temperature and/or 24 hours after a rainstorm, and that carpenter-ant alates fly in the evening during the rainy season. Rain does not convert wings into a wood-destroying organism report. Moisture is conducive for the termite side of the pair. The report is licensed.

When a licensed pest control company inspects a structure for wood-destroying organisms in a real estate transaction, and either charges a fee or is asked for a written report, Florida requires a wood-destroying organism inspection report. That is Florida Statutes section 482.226. The inspection has to cover all wood-destroying organisms, not only the insect on the glass. The report is not a guarantee of absence unless it specifically states the extent of such a guarantee. See Fla. Stat. 482.226. A person may not perform those inspections without the identification card the chapter requires. We do not hold that card. We match.

Florida Statutes section 482.191 makes it unlawful to solicit, practice, perform, or advertise in pest control except as Chapter 482 provides. Advertising that we tent a Windermere house would be advertising pest control we are not licensed to perform. If the job is a sale or refinance, say so and use termite and WDO. If the job is wings after rain and you are not selling, it is still a licensed look. Nearby: Windermere and get a quote.

What you can do before a licensed look

UF/IFAS’s homeowner half is moisture, clutter, and a note that says pinched waist versus broad waist, unequal wings versus equal wings, frass versus mud tubes versus pellets. Pull mulch back. Direct sprinklers off the stucco. Trim branches that touch the house — UF/IFAS names those bridges as carpenter-ant access. Do not bag a few insects and call that an ID. Do not disturb a known soil treatment. If a contract needs a 482.226 form, say the closing date. We still only match.

FAQs

How do I tell a carpenter ant from a termite on a Windermere sill?

UF/IFAS: ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and front wings larger than hind wings. Termites have a broad waist and four equal wings. Florida carpenter ants do not eat wood. A photo is still not an ID. A licensee looks.

Do Florida carpenter ants destroy sound framing the way termites do?

UF/IFAS says Florida carpenter ants excavate rotten or pithy wood and Styrofoam and do not damage sound wood to any extent. FDACS says subterranean termites are the most destructive wood-destroying insect in the state. Those are different jobs.

Is a pile of sawdust termite damage?

Frass mixed with insect parts is a carpenter-ant clue. Mud tubes are a subterranean-termite clue. Hexagonal pellets are a drywood clue. See drywood vs subterranean. None of those piles is a 482.226 form.

Does a WDO report cover carpenter ants?

Section 482.226 is a department-form report for wood-destroying organisms when a licensee inspects for a real estate transaction. Carpenter ants are not termites. Say wings, frass, or mud tubes on the form. If you are selling or refinancing, say that too.

Do you inspect or tent Windermere houses?

No. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not spray, bait, inspect, or tent. Use get a quote and name Windermere.
