Matching service only. Under Florida Chapter 482 we are not a certified operator. We do not spray, bait, tent, or inspect.
Fire ant mounds after rain in a Horizon West yard are a matching note, not a weekend chemistry project. UF/IFAS describes the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, nesting in lawns, under patio slabs, at sidewalk edges, foundations, driveways, and electrical boxes. After a heavy rain, the colony may move to higher ground or inside a structure to get out of saturated soil. That sentence is from the EDIS Featured Creatures profile. It is not a reason for this site to sell a mound drench.
Orlando West Pest Care is a matching service. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not spray, bait, tent, inspect, or trap. Florida law is the reason: it is unlawful to solicit, practice, perform, or advertise in pest control except as Chapter 482 provides (Fla. Stat. 482.191). If the complaint is turf, a patio slab, or a play set in a private backyard, start at general household pest or get a quote. We still only match.
This is for residential owners in Horizon West, Winter Garden, Hamlin, Waterleigh, Windermere, Ocoee, Oakland, Stoneybrook West, Clermont, and Minneola. It is not an HOA amenity-center contract. The club lawn and the private backyard are different sites, different decision-makers, and often different licenses.
What UF/IFAS actually says about the insect
Two fire ant species occur in Florida. The notorious one is the red imported fire ant. The much less common native is Solenopsis geminata. UF/IFAS describes RIFA workers as polymorphic, usually red to brown with a darker gaster, and aggressive when a mound is disturbed. They bite and sting. A white pustule often appears the next day. The venom is largely alkaloid; that chemistry is why the pustule forms. Allergic reactions are a medical issue, not a matching-form diagnosis. We do not treat stings.
Mounds are built of soil. UF/IFAS notes they are seldom larger than about 18 inches in diameter in the literature it cites. We will not invent a mound count for a Horizon West lot. Mating flights often occur on a warm, sunny day following rain, midday above about 74°F. After heavy rain, colonies may move to higher ground or indoors. That is the EDIS line that matches fresh soil in turf and ants at a slab edge. Saturated soil is the mechanism. NOAA’s rain totals are the calendar.
Horizon West rain is not a light sprinkle season
The Florida Climate Center publishes NOAA / NCEI 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport: 51.45 inches a year, with 8.05 inches in June, 7.46 in July, 7.69 in August, and 6.37 in September. Horizon West was drawn around wet stormwater ponds and new turf. Those four months are when soil stays wet, irrigation still runs, and mounds that were flat last week are obvious this week.
That is climate context. It is not a named storm we will invent, and it is not a reason to treat a neighbor’s HOA lake bank from a residential matching form. If mosquitoes are the complaint after the same rain, that is a pond and mosquito matching note. Fire ants are a turf and structure insect. Do not merge the two on the form unless both are actually present.
HOA amenity lawns are not a private backyard
Horizon West is a sector plan, not a city. Hamlin, Waterleigh, and the other villages sit next to amenity lawns, playgrounds, and retention-pond banks the association maintains. A mound on the club lawn is an HOA or landscape-vendor problem. A mound in a fenced backyard, against a patio slab, or next to a kids’ play set is a residential matching note.
We match residential homes. We do not bid amenity-center accounts, and we do not tell an HOA which product to put on common turf. If your board already has a lawn vendor, that is their contract. If the ants are in your private yard, say private yard on the quote form and name the village. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator who already drives Horizon West.
Kids and pets change the conversation the operator will have. They do not change our role. We do not choose products. If someone in the house has a known fire-ant allergy, say so in the notes. We still do not diagnose, and we still do not apply anything.
What a licensed operator may do — and what this site will not
UF/IFAS describes two management approaches in the urban literature: treating individual mounds, and broadcast bait or granular work over a larger area. Individual mound methods in that publication include drenches, dusts, injections, and baits placed around a mound. Broadcast baits cover more ground and are not specific only to imported fire ants. Home remedies such as boiling water or flammable liquids are called out as dangerous and not recommended. We will not repeat those as tips.
None of that is work Orlando West Pest Care performs. We do not drench mounds. We do not broadcast bait. We do not inject a slab. Advertising those services from this site would be advertising pest control we are not licensed to perform. A licensed operator you are matched with may use one of those labeled methods, or may tell you the amenity lawn is not their residential job. That call is theirs.
Native fire ants, where they still occur, are not the same insect. A matching form is not an identification service. If you are not sure they are fire ants, say so. The operator looks.
New Horizon West lots and electrical equipment
UF/IFAS lists electrical boxes among urban nesting sites. New construction puts meter cans, irrigation timers, and pool equipment on young lots. After rain, that gear is higher and drier than the lawn. If ants are in a panel, say equipment on the form and leave the cover closed. Patio slabs are the other note: nesting under a slab can leave a cavity. That is a licensed look, not a matching-site structural opinion. We will not invent damage, a price, or a review.
What to put on the matching form
Use get a quote. Say fire ant mounds, private backyard versus HOA common lawn, and whether kids or pets use the turf. Name Horizon West, Hamlin, Waterleigh, or the city. If the same rain also brought mosquitoes, use the mosquito page as a separate matching note. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not bait a mound from this form.

FAQs
Why do fire ant mounds show up in Horizon West yards after rain?
UF/IFAS notes that after a heavy rain, a colony may move to higher ground or inside to escape saturated soil. NOAA’s Orlando normals still put more than eight inches in June and more than six in September. Rain makes mounds obvious. It does not write a treatment plan.
Is the HOA lawn the same job as my backyard?
No. Amenity turf is usually the association or its landscape vendor. A private backyard is a residential matching note. We match homes. We do not bid clubhouse lawns.
Do you bait or drench the mounds yourselves?
No. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not spray, bait, tent, inspect, or trap. UF/IFAS describes mound and broadcast methods as licensed or labeled work, not matching-site work.
What about kids and pets on the grass?
Tell the operator. We do not choose products. The licensee does, under the label. If someone in the house has a known allergy to fire ant stings, put that in the quote notes. We still only match.
How do I request a match for Horizon West fire ants?
Use get a quote. Say private yard versus common lawn, and name the village. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator.
