Matching service. Backyard mosquitoes near Horizon West and Hamlin retention ponds are a program note for a licensed operator. Orlando West Pest Care does not fog or apply larvicide.
Horizon West and Hamlin were built around water management: retention ponds, swales, and young landscaping that holds irrigation. Homeowners then ask why mosquito pressure stays high even when “it hasn’t rained in two days.” The short answer is that Florida mosquitoes do not need a lake. CDC’s mosquito-control guidance starts with source reduction: empty, dump, and drain small water containers. A bottle cap, a plant saucer, a clogged gutter, a corrugated downspout, and a recycling bin lid can breed the container species that bite at dusk on a lanai. A community pond in the view corridor does not cancel that private-lot list.
The Florida Climate Center’s Orlando International 1991–2020 normals put 51.45 inches of rain a year, with June–September carrying more than half of that total (8.05, 7.46, 7.69, and 6.37 inches). After those rains, ponds rise and yards hold water in places a weekly mower does not see. Irrigation in Waterleigh, Horizon West, and Hamlin adds a second clock: over-spray, blocked emitters, and low spots that refill on a timer. See also irrigation mosquitoes in Waterleigh.
Ponds are not the only story
A community pond is often managed under a different program than a private backyard. CDD or HOA amenity work is not the same decision-maker as a homeowner asking for a residential mosquito program. This site matches residential homes, not district contracts. What matters on a Hamlin lot is the private rim: toys, tarps, boat covers, pet bowls, and screen-cage corners that hold rain after every cell. CDC’s mosquito and West Nile pages emphasize personal protection (long sleeves when practical, screens, and EPA-registered repellents used as labeled) and reducing standing water around the home. They do not authorize this site to advertise fogging.
Florida winters are not a freeze-out for every species. Eggs and sheltered adults can carry pressure into cooler months in Clermont and Minneola as well as west Orange. A January evening on a Clermont lanai is a different calendar from a June Horizon West pond edge, but it is still a matching note when bites continue. See Florida winter mosquitoes in Clermont.
Screen cages and dusk pressure
Many Horizon West and Hamlin houses use a pool cage or lanai as the evening room. Torn panels, doors that do not latch, and gaps at the baseboard turn that room into a trap for mosquitoes that bred twenty feet away. That is a related matching note, not a DIY knockdown with a grocery-store fogger: screen-cage pests on a Horizon West lanai. Fixing an obvious panel tear is homeowner maintenance. Advertising a yard fog from this page would be advertising pest control under Fla. Stat. § 482.191 without the license Chapter 482 requires.
What a licensed mosquito program is for
Under Florida Chapter 482, a business that performs or advertises pest control must stay inside the licensed categories. A licensed operator may assess a yard, talk about larval sites they are allowed to treat, and run a residential mosquito program if that is what you hire. Orlando West Pest Care does not do that work. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator who already drives Horizon West and Hamlin. We do not invent a product name, a ticket count, or a “how many sprays until it’s gone” promise.
What to send on the match form
City or subdivision, whether the complaint is dusk bites on a lanai or daytime container breeders, whether irrigation runs daily, and whether a screen cage is involved. Dumping saucers and clearing gutters is homeowner source reduction, not pest control. For a licensed program match, use mosquito programs or get a quote. We match. We do not fog.
New construction and “why is it worse than the old neighborhood”
Many Horizon West and Hamlin buyers moved from older Winter Garden or Ocoee streets where the canopy and drainage felt different. Young lots expose irrigation lines, temporary grading, and landscaping that was installed for curb appeal rather than dry feet. That does not make every bite a pond story, and it does not make every dusk evening a reason to hire the first truck that offers a fog. It does mean the match form should name the subdivision and whether the yard is still on builder irrigation settings. A licensed operator who already works that map will know the difference between a private container problem and a site that needs a residential program conversation. Orlando West Pest Care still only matches. We do not sell a package count or invent a “new construction mosquito special.”
If the house is vacant for weeks at a time, mosquito pressure is only one vacant-house note. Rodents, ants, and missed WDO timing show up on snowbird calendars too. See April snowbird lockup pest plan and vacant and snowbird matching when that is the real job.

Do retention ponds mean mosquitoes forever?
Ponds are one moisture story. CDC still starts with small containers around the house. A community pond and a private backyard are different programs.
Will you fog my Hamlin yard?
No. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not fog, spray, or apply larvicide.
Does irrigation matter if it has not rained?
Yes. Over-spray and low spots can hold water on the same clock as a weekly irrigation schedule. See the Waterleigh irrigation article.
Are winter mosquitoes impossible in Central Florida?
No. Some pressure continues in cooler months, especially after warm spells. See the Clermont winter mosquitoes article.
