Matching service only. Under Florida Chapter 482 we are not a certified operator. We do not spray, bait, tent, or inspect.
After a string of wet-season afternoons in Horizon West, a dog that rests on the lanai scratches harder, or ankles itch on the carpet where the pet sleeps. That pattern is common in west Orange County when rain keeps outdoor soil and shaded resting spots wet. University of Florida IFAS explains how fleas develop in warm, humid Florida homes and yards. Orlando West Pest Care is a matching service. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not spray, bait, inspect, treat pets, or tent.
This note is for residential houses in Horizon West, Hamlin, Waterleigh, Winter Garden, Windermere, Ocoee, Oakland, Stoneybrook West, Clermont, and Minneola. If the pressure is on a private lot — dog run, lanai, carpet, garage threshold — use general household pest or get a quote. Name Horizon West. We will not quote the amenity lawn. The licensee who already drives that street is the one who looks. We still only match.
What UF/IFAS says fleas actually are in Florida
UF/IFAS publication ENY-205/IG087 is the Florida flea file. Fleas are small (about 1/16 inch), dark reddish-brown, wingless, blood-sucking insects with bodies flattened side to side so they move through fur. The cat flea is the species most frequently found in Florida. Cat fleas attack dogs, humans, and other warm-blooded hosts. Dog, human, and sticktight fleas also occur, and more than one species can be found on a single animal. See UF/IFAS, Fleas (ENY-205/IG087).
Eggs are tiny and white. They fall onto floors, bedding, furniture, or soil. UF/IFAS notes some fleas can lay about 500 eggs over several months. Eggs hatch in one to 12 days. Larvae feed mainly on dried adult feces, then pupate. Adults often emerge in about a week — but pupae can wait five days to five weeks when hosts are scarce. Vibration from a pet or person signals a host is near, which is why people returning to an empty house can suddenly feel bites. Adults need blood to reproduce and breed most heavily where pets rest. On people, bites commonly hit ankles and lower legs.
UF/IFAS is clear about the outdoor myth: the so-called “sand flea” is a common flea breeding outdoors in the soil. Fleas cannot run several generations without a blood meal. The life cycle can take from two weeks to two years. Hot, wet summer months favor egg laying; hot, dry stretches favor adult emergence. UF/IFAS puts the greatest adult flea populations in August to September — peak wet-season timing for Horizon West yards.
Why rain feels like a flea trigger in Horizon West
Rain does not invent fleas. It keeps the outdoor half of the life cycle comfortable: shaded soil under shrubs, damp edges of a dog run, mulch against a lanai slab, and pet resting spots that stay humid after a storm. The Florida Climate Center’s NOAA / NCEI 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport show 51.45 inches of rain a year, 6.37 inches in September, and a September mean temperature of 81.0°F (annual mean 73.0°F). See the Florida Climate Center Orlando 1991–2020 normals.
A Horizon West lot after a wet week fits those normals: warm evenings, irrigated turf, pond edges nearby, and pets moving between yard and carpet. When outdoor breeding pressure is high, adults hitch on the dog or cat and finish indoors on rugs and furniture. UF/IFAS says infestations often become more obvious when pets are removed — hungry adults turn to people. That is a life-cycle note, not a treatment plan from this site.
Pets, bites, and what CDC actually says
CDC’s fleas overview states that fleas feed on animal or human blood, that bites itch, and that some fleas can carry germs linked to flea-borne typhus, plague, or cat scratch disease. CDC’s prevention page is plain: keep pets free of fleas; talk with a veterinarian about year-round products; limit outdoor roaming and contact with wild or stray animals. See CDC, About Fleas and CDC, Preventing Fleas.
UF/IFAS adds that flea bites can itch enough to cause secondary infection, that sensitivity varies, and that cat and dog fleas can be intermediate hosts for the dog tapeworm. This page does not invent a local outbreak for Orange or Lake County. CDC describes plague mainly in rural western U.S. areas. For a Horizon West house, the practical line is pet-focused prevention and veterinary guidance — not a spray claim from a matching site.
We do not treat pets or apply products to dogs, cats, carpets, or yards. A veterinarian owns the on-animal plan. A Florida-licensed structural pest control operator owns any premise work the law allows. We only match.
Why the operator has to be licensed in Florida
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services licenses structural pest control. For pest control provided to homes, each business location must be licensed by FDACS, carry required insurance, and employ full-time a Florida-certified operator in the categories in which the business operates, including general household pest and rodent control. See FDACS Pest Control Licensing and Certification.
Florida Statutes section 482.191 makes it unlawful to solicit, practice, perform, or advertise in pest control except as Chapter 482 provides. We are not that licensee. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator who already works Horizon West. We do not spray the lanai, fog the carpet, bait the yard, inspect the crawl, or treat your pets. See Fla. Stat. 482.191.
On the quote form, say indoors versus yard versus both, Horizon West or the nearest named street, and whether pets sleep on carpet, crate, or lanai furniture. Nearby: general household pest, Horizon West, and get a quote.
What you can do before a licensed look
UF/IFAS’s non-pesticide notes start with thorough cleaning: vacuum or steam-clean rugs, bedding, pet baskets, and cracks, then dispose of vacuum contents promptly. CDC’s pet line is veterinarian-approved flea control and less wildlife contact. Those steps are sanitation and pet care — not a Florida pest-control license, and not something this matching site performs. If pressure continues after rain in the dog’s resting zone, that is the match request. We still only match.

FAQs
Do fleas get worse after rain in Horizon West?
Rain keeps outdoor soil and pet resting spots humid. UF/IFAS says hot, wet months favor egg laying and puts peak adult flea populations in August–September. Orlando normals put 6.37 inches of rain in September. Rain is context, not a magic cause. We match a licensed operator. We do not spray.
What flea species does Florida usually have?
UF/IFAS says the cat flea is the most frequently found flea in Florida. Dog, human, and sticktight fleas also occur. A licensee IDs what is on the premises. We only match.
Should I remove the dog from the house to starve the fleas?
UF/IFAS warns that removing pets often makes bites on people more obvious because hungry adults turn to humans. CDC’s prevention line starts with keeping pets free of fleas with veterinarian guidance. We do not treat pets.
Can fleas spread disease in Florida?
CDC notes some fleas can carry germs linked to flea-borne typhus, plague, or cat scratch disease. This page does not invent a local outbreak for Horizon West. Ask a physician or veterinarian about health symptoms. For the house, we match a licensed operator only.
Do you spray Horizon West yards for fleas?
No. We match you with a licensed local pest control operator. We do not spray, bait, inspect, tent, or treat pets. Use get a quote and name Horizon West.
